Missing Verona, the youngest, not yet born.
My Grandfather was an accountant for the city of Constanza. He was a gentle, happy, loving man. He never raised his voice and loved to make people laugh. He liked to get whatever new gadgets came out on the market, being one of the first to get a radio and a car in Constanza.
My Grandmother was an amazing wise woman. Even though she only had a few years of schooling she loved to read and was well versed on just about any subject. After losing two children in infancy and being so busy with the remaining 7, she ‘prohibited’ them from being sick. ‘No one is allowed to be sick in this house’ she would say if anyone sneezed or at any sign of malaise. And they complied 🙂 I feel fortunate to have met and got to know her when going back on visits to Romania.
In her old age she lived with my Aunt Verona, still in the same house where my Mother was born. One day, when my Aunt came home she found my Grandmother feeding a man in the kitchen. It turns out he was a thief who had entered to rob the house. My frail Grandmother calmly made him sit down and fed him. This was during the communist regime when food was very scarce.
