Andreas Moussou

born April 25, 1960, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

My brother was of course a late surprise as my Mother was in her 40’s, my sister was 19 and had left to study in the U.S. and I was 14 years old. But it was a great pleasant surprise for my Father who had always wanted a boy. I remember throughout my Mother’s pregnancy he started writing everywhere around the house: ‘Andreas Moussou Jr’ even though back then people did not know the gender of their babies.

I loved looking after him and in fact he took his first steps between me and my teenage boyfriend while we were babysitting. He was a very quiet and pensive baby and toddler. He could understand everything but did not speak till he was 3.  And no wonder, since we were all speaking to him in a different language at that time.

He was 10 years old when my Father died and 15 when my Mother died. He lived with me for a while and then moved in with my sister when I moved to England.

He spent some time time in a Monastery in Mt. Athos. Funny story about that dog. He used to paint icons using natural flowers, eggs, etc. for colors. One day he finished painting an icon and after he left it to dry next thing he knew his dog had licked the whole painting 😂

One day, on one of his visits to Athens he met a theater actress, Fotini Tsantili. They fell in love, he left the Monastery, got married and had two children. They were married in Constanza, Romania at a time when the regime was still Communist and church marriages were conducted in secret. But all my Romanian family was there.

And here is my brother with his children, my nephew Nikita and niece Markela.

How I wished we lived closer and could see each other more often …
